I have been involved in many family councils. Family councils are small, informal, self-governing organizations that bring together parents, caregivers, educators, therapists, and community members in support of their children with special needs. These councils are typically formed as a last resort, when the child’s needs have been unmet, and have not been addressed by school, therapists, or families. The parents bring an essential component to the group, a community of support that often forms a unique and powerful bond with one another.

My family council has been a part of our lives since our early childhood. Since then we have worked as a team to solve common problems and make decisions. In my 12 years as mayor, I have worked closely with the School Board on a number of issues. Some of these issues, however, have required more significant public dialogue than others. Last spring, for example, we heard loud and clear that the town must find a way to fundamentally change its outdated school system. As our School Board did too.
